Germany Embassy Was Teaching Democratic Principles; Foreign Ministry Sought Reply

New Delhi : The echo of Delhi Liquor Policy Case started reaching outside the country. After the arrest of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Germany found it difficult to teach law to India through its ambassador. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has lodged a strong protest against this interference and has summoned a senior diplomat of the German Embassy in this matter.

Know the issue…

The case pertains to alleged corruption and money laundering in the formulation and implementation of the Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22, in which the Enforcement Directorate arrested Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday night. This is the first arrest of a sitting Chief Minister in India. On Friday, the German Embassy also tried to intervene in this matter.

The German Embassy’s deputy chief of mission, Georg Enzweiler, had said that like anyone facing charges, CM Kejriwal deserves a fair trial. He can use all available legal avenues without any restriction. Germany’s Foreign Ministry said the presumption of innocence is a central element of the rule of law and should apply. The Indian Foreign Ministry has expressed strong objection to this.

How Foreign Ministry objects

In this regard, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that the Deputy Chief of the German Mission in New Delhi has been summoned. India is a vibrant and strong democracy with the rule of law. As in all other legal matters in the country and in the democratic world, the law will take its course in the instant case. We view such comments as interfering with the judicial process and undermining the independence of our judiciary. Due to this, India’s strong opposition was conveyed to the comments of their Foreign Office spokesperson on its internal matters.
