Actually, Tiantong is a kind of satellite communication system, which has been developed by China. Its objective is to provide universal access to communication services to all. China launched its first satellite named Tiantong-1 on 6 August 2016. In the current situation, three such satellites of China are traveling in an orbit of 36 thousand kilometers. With their help, China covers the entire Asia-Pacific. On the other hand, it is also noteworthy that in September 2023, Chinese company Huawei launched the world’s first smartphone with the facility of satellite calls. If we look at a report by South China Morning Post, companies like Xiaomi, Honor and Oppo are also developing such smartphones.
The idea of such satellites came to China in 2008, when more than 80 thousand people died due to a terrible earthquake of magnitude 8 in south-western China. The rescue operation was delayed due to breakdown of communication system in the earthquake affected areas, hence to deal with such situation, the government of the country started the Tiantong Project with the help of Chinese scientists.
