14 Killed In Illegal Gold Mine Collapse In Venezuela; Dozens More May Be Trapped

Venezuela: About 14 people have been reported dead due to the collapse of an illegally operated gold mine in Venezuela. It is also being told that many people are seriously injured in the accident. According to official statements, it is not yet possible to give accurate information about how many people are still buried inside the mine.

Notably, the Venezuelan government in 2016 established a massive mining development zone spanning the middle of the country to add new revenues to its oil industry. Since then, mining operations for gold, diamonds, copper and other minerals have expanded rapidly within and outside the region. Many mines operate in violation of the law. Due to this, 14 people lost their lives on Thursday also.

The accident occurred due to the collapse of a wall in an illegal mine named Bulla Loka. The official statement said that so far 14 bodies have been taken out from the spot. Around 11 people are injured. Relief and rescue work was started immediately after the accident, which is still going on. Angostura Mayor Yorgi Arcienega said late at night that the number of people killed in the accident could be in the dozens. On the other hand, it is also noteworthy that this mine is in such a remote area that it could be reached only by a boat ride of hours.
