Now Swedish Teenagers Will Be Able To Undergo Gender Change; Know The New Law, Which Is In Debate

Sweden’s Parliament passed a law on Wednesday to reduce the minimum age for legal gender change from 18 to 16 years and to simplify the gender change process. Supporters of the bill say it is a modernization of the existing law, while the right-wing Sweden Democrats, who have come out in opposition, consider it a threat to society as a whole. Let us know what this new law says…

Swedes have had the right to legally change gender since 1972, but it could take years, Reuters reports. This requires a thorough investigation and doctor’s diagnosis of gender dysphoria. Now a law has been passed to make this process easier. On Wednesday, in the 349-seat Parliament, 234 votes were cast in favor of this law and 94 against it. It is being said that the new provision to be implemented from next year will separate the legal gender change process from medical procedures like gender change surgery. Under this, approval from the National Board of Health and Welfare as well as a short consultation with a doctor or psychologist will suffice.

Only time will tell what the future will be like – but at present there is a lot of debate going on about it. According to a recent survey, 59% of Swedes say it is a bad or very bad proposal, while 22% think it is a good proposal. Supporters of the bill say it is a modernization of existing law, which will bring Sweden closer to its Nordic neighbors and many other European countries. On the other hand, Carita Boulven of the far-right Sweden Democrats said, ‘We believe that this is a condemnable proposal, which risks having unexpected and serious consequences. Not only for the individual, but for the entire society.
