New City Being Built In Indonesia By Spending Billions Of Dollars; Why The Country Changing It’s capital?

The Indonesian Parliament on Thursday granted special status to Jakarta, keeping it as the country’s economic hub. This step has been taken amid plans to change the capital. It is noteworthy that Indonesia is moving its capital away from the overcrowded and sinking Jakarta. Nusantara, a city being built at a cost of $32 billion, will be the new capital of the country, which is located in the forests of East Kalimantan in Borneo.

Nusantara This city is a major project of outgoing President Joko Widodo. He promised to redistribute the money and development currently concentrated in Java throughout the archipelago. According to a copy of the new law dated March 18, an ‘agglomeration’ council will be formed to coordinate the development plan between Jakarta and its satellite cities, news agency Reuters reported. ‘Jarkata would have been made better’.

Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian said after discussions in parliament that even after the capital moves to Nusantara, Jakarta will still have to be improved to compete with other ‘world-class cities’. “Now that it is no longer the capital, it still needs to be given a special status so that it can accelerate economic growth and contribute to the country’s GDP,” Carnavian said.

When will the capital shift

Under current rules, Jakarta will remain the capital of Indonesia until the President issues an order officially designating Nusantara as the new capital, which is expected to happen this year. The government hopes to hold the 2024 Independence Day celebrations in Nusantara on August 17 and thousands of civil servants are expected to move there by the end of the year.
