Same Sex Marriage: Alexander’s Birthplace Greece Created History By Giving Recognition

The Southern European country Greece created a big history on Thursday. The country’s Parliament has recognized gay marriage. After this, this country, which holds the pride of being the birthplace of Alexander, has been given the seal of approval as the first Orthodox country in the world to do so. Along with this, the big thing is that despite the opposition of the Church, the Parliament passed this law. The Prime Minister of Greece has called this decision of the Parliament a historic victory for human rights in the country.

Let us tell you that same-sex marriage was first legalized by the Netherlands in April 2001. Although Denmark had given permission to register same-sex couples as domestic partners in 1989, it had not made any formal law. This law could be made there only in 2012. Apart from this, gay marriage is also legal in countries like Belgium, Canada, Spain, South Africa, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Portugal, Argentina, Brazil, England, Wales, Costa Rica, Taiwan. Now after passing this law, Greece will be able to stand at par with 20 other countries of Europe. It will also strengthen its human rights credentials before the upcoming European elections. It will also help distance the ruling party from opponents’ recent allegations of wiretapping, migrant pressure and decline in media freedom. Along with this, it is also noteworthy here that Greece was ranked last in the World Press Freedom Index of Reporters Without Borders 2023.

LGBTQ+ welcomed the decision, religious officials said – social unity will be ruined

The country’s LGBTQ+ community has welcomed this decision. He says that this will make life much easier for many people, especially those children who are living in uncertainty. On the other hand, it is not that this law was not opposed. When the debate on this started in Parliament, the powerful Orthodox Church here stood against it. Supporters of the church also took out a protest rally in Athens, the capital of Greece. Many people took to the streets carrying banners, crosses and Bibles. Despite strong opposition from the Church, Parliament has ruled in favor of gay couples. In this regard, the head of the Orthodox Church says that this step will ruin the social unity of Greece.

Such was the political mathematics

The political scenario regarding the new law is no less interesting. It is important to tell that there are 300 members in the Parliament of Greece. A simple majority was required to pass the law, but despite having the support of the Prime Minister, it was not easy to gather majority to pass the bill. This required the support of opposition parties and dozens of MPs from the centre-right party were in opposition. Then a total of 254 MPs voted in the Parliament, out of which 176 votes were in favor of the new bill and 76 were against it. Strong support from centre-left and leftist opposition parties helped legitimize it. Ultimately, after more than 30 hours of debate over two days, the bill was passed.
